February's Lunch & Learn Highlights

Advancing Democracy Resilience Together

The SUNSHINE 100's recent Lunch & Learn session served as both a reflection on progress and a forward-looking discussion about how collaborative, community-based efforts can strengthen democratic institutions at a critical moment.

Leadership, Continuity, and Shared Purpose

The event opened with welcoming remarks recognizing the growing network of partners and advocates who have contributed to the initiative’s momentum over the past several years. Emphasizing the importance of continuity and collaboration, this event focused on highlighting a successful leadership transition that positions the program for continued growth and long-term sustainability.

Participants were introduced to Sarah Johnson, Senior Associate Director of the Carter Center’s Democracy and Conflict Resolution Programs, who now leads key aspects of this work. Sarah brings extensive global experience in conflict mitigation, democratic governance, and election observation, with a particular focus on supporting state-based democratic resilience networks across the United States.

The Carter Center’s Legacy and Global Impact

During the presentation, attendees received an overview of the Carter Center’s history and mission. Founded to advance peace, health, and human rights worldwide, the Center has spent decades supporting countries navigating political transitions, strengthening democratic processes, and promoting inclusive governance.

Sarah shared how the organization’s work spans election observation, conflict resolution, and global health initiatives, reflecting a holistic approach to building stable and resilient societies. This legacy continues to inform the Center’s evolving role both internationally and domestically.

Applying Global Lessons to the U.S. Context

A key theme of the discussion was how insights gained from decades of international democracy programming are now being applied to challenges within the United States. As communities grapple with increased polarization and social division, the Carter Center is investing in state-based partnerships that encourage dialogue, civic engagement, and collaboration across ideological differences.

Sarah underscored that democracy resilience is rooted in relationships,  bringing diverse voices together to build trust, strengthen civic norms, and support peaceful, constructive engagement.

Looking Ahead

The Lunch & Learn closed with an invitation for participants to remain engaged as the program expands. Future priorities include deepening partnerships, supporting local leadership, and continuing to build networks that promote democratic resilience at the community level.

Through collaboration and shared purpose, the Carter Center and its partners are working to ensure that democratic values remain strong, not only around the world, but here at home.
